How to import citations into EndNote from Ovid, Current Contents Connect, and PubMed

You may import citations retrieved from searching Ovid, ISI Web of Knowledge (including Current Contents Connect and Web of Science/Science Citation Index) and PubMed into an EndNote library.


There are two ways to do this in Ovid and ISI Web of Knowledge:

PubMed supports only saving and importing.

Exporting citations from OVID databases, including Medline, and PsycINFO

  1. EndNote does not have to be open when you run your search.
  2. Run search as normal and review results.
  3. Scroll down to the Results Manager.
  4. In the Results Manager indicate Results to save.
  5. Under Fields select Complete Reference.
  6. Under Result Format, select Direct Export.
  7. Click SAVE.

  1. Select Export results to Endnote, Procite, or Reference Manager. Click Continue.
  2. At the Select a Reference Library window, you may either choose to create a new library or add the new citations to a currently existing EndNote library.
  3. Once the references are imported, they appear in the library window. To see all your references, click Show All References in the References drop-down menu.

Saving Ovid citations in a file and importing them into EndNote

  1. Run Ovid search as normal and review search results..
  2. In the Results Manager indicate Results to save.
  3. Under Fields select Complete Reference.
  4. Under Result Format, select Reprint/Medlars.
  5. Click SAVE.

  1. On the Save Results screen, select Windows Style Linefeeds if you are using a PC. Deselect Include Search Strategy? Click Continue.
  2. Your browser will display a dialog box asking where to save the file. Ovid’s default file name is cites.txt.  
  3. In EndNote, open your library.
  4. Select File. Click Import… on the drop-down menu.
  5. In the Import Data File field, click the Choose File button. Select the file you just downloaded.
  6. In the Import Option field, select MEDLINE [OVID] from the drop-down list.  If it does not appear on this short list, select Other Filters…, and select MEDLINE [OVID] from the complete list.
  7. EndNote offers several ways to deal with importing possible duplicate references.  From the Duplicates drop-down list select one of the following options: Import All, Discard Duplicates, or Import into Duplicates Library.
  8. Text Translation is not necessary for importing Ovid references.
  9. Click the Import button.
  10. Once the import is complete, only the newly imported references appear in the library window. To view all of the references in your library, select Show All from the References menu.

Exporting citations from ISI Web of Knowledge (including Current Contents Connect and Web of Science/Science Citation Index)

Using Direct Export

  1. EndNote does not have to be open when you run your search.
  2. Run search as normal and review results.
  3. Select Full Record from drop-down menu.
  4. Click EXPORT TO REFERENCE SOFTWARE

  1. At the Select a Reference Library window, you may either choose to create a new library or add the new citations to a currently existing EndNote library.
  2. Once the import is complete, only the newly imported references appear in the library window. To view all of the references in your Library, select Show All from the References menu.

  1. Run search as normal and review results.
  2. In Output Records window, indicate results and click SAVE.
  3. Select Field Tagged from the menu on the next screen, and click Continue.
  4. Your browser will display a dialog box asking where to save the file. ISI’s default file name is savedrecs.txt.
  5. In EndNote, open your library.
  6. Select File. Click Import… on the drop-down menu.
  7. In the Import Data File field, click the Choose File button. Select the file you just downloaded.
  8. In the Import Option field, select ISI-CE from the drop-down list.  If it does not appear on this short list, select Other Filters…, and select ISI-CE from the complete list.
  9. EndNote offers several ways to deal with importing possible duplicate references.  From the Duplicates drop-down list select one of the following options: Import All, Discard Duplicates, or Import into Duplicates Library.
  10. Text Translation is not necessary for importing Ovid references.
  11. Click the Import button.
  12. Once the import is complete, only the newly imported references appear in the library window. To view all of the references in your library, select Show All from the References menu

  1. You may clear any previous import session. Those references will not be deleted from your database.
  2. Once the references are imported, they are appended to the database and appear in the Reference List, which has two tabs. One has the name of your database, and displays all the references. The other, labeled Imported, displays only the newly imported references.

Exporting Citations from PubMed

PubMed does not have its own Direct Export tool, but you can save citations to a file and import them into EndNote.

  1. Run search as normal and review results.
  2. To save records from multiple searches, select Clipboard from the Send to drop-down menu.
  3. On the search results page, select MEDLINE in the drop-down menu next to the Display button.
  4. Choose File from the Send to drop-down menu, and then click the Send to button.

  5. PubMed

  6. Click the Save to Disk button in the File Download window. Save the file somewhere easily accessible, such as your desktop. The default file name is pubmed-result.txt.
  7. Select File. Click Import… on the drop-down menu.
  8. In the Import Data File field, click the Choose File button. Select the file you just downloaded.
  9. In the Import Option field, select Pubmed (NLM) from the drop-down list.  If it does not appear on this short list, select Other Filters…, and select Pubmed (NLM) from the complete list.
  10. EndNote offers several ways to deal with importing possible duplicate references.  From the Duplicates drop-down list select one of the following options: Import All, Discard Duplicates, or Import into Duplicates Library.
  11. Text Translation is not necessary for importing Ovid references.
  12. Click the Import button.
  13. Once the import is complete, only the newly imported references appear in the library window. To view all of the references in your library, select Show All from the References menu.
