Importing Citations into Refworks

You may import search results from Ovid, ISI Web of Knowledge (including Current Contents Connect and Web of Science/Science Citation Index) and PubMed into a Refworks database.

 

There are two ways to do this in Ovid: 

 

PubMed and ISI Web of Knowledge support only saving and importing.

Exporting citations from OVID databases, including MEDLINE, and PsycINFO

 

  1. Refworks does not have to be open when you run your search.
  2. Run search as normal and review results.
  3. Scroll down to the Results Manager.
  4. In the Results Manager indicate Results to save.
  5. Under Fields select Complete Reference.
  6. Under Result Format, select Direct Export.
  7. Click SAVE.

  1. Select Export results to Refworks. Click Continue.
  2. The new references are imported into the Last Imported Folder.

  1. Run search as normal and review search results.
  2. Scroll down to the Results Manager.
  3. In the Results Manager indicate Results to save.
  4. Under Fields select Complete Reference.
  5. Under Result Format, select Ovid.
  6. Click SAVE.

  1. On the Save Results screen, select Windows Style Linefeeds if you are using a PC. Deselect Include Search Strategy? Click Continue.
  2. Your web browser will display a dialog box asking where to save the file. Ovid’s default file name is cites.txt
  3. In Refworks, select References, and click Import on the drop-down menu.
  4. In the Import Filter/Data Source field, select Ovid from the drop-down list.
  5. In the Database field, select MEDLINE from the drop-down list. 
  6. You may optionally specify the folder where you would like your references to go in the Import References into field. All references also go into the Last Imported folder.
  7. Select Import Data from the Following Text File and Browse to find your file.
  8. Click the Import button. The text references that you downloaded from the web site will be imported into the Last Imported Folder.

Saving ISI Web of Knowledge (including Current Contents Connect and Web of Science/Science Citation Index) citations in a file and importing them into EndNote

 

ISI’s Direct Export option does not work with Refworks, but you may save citations to a file and import them into Refworks.

  1. Run search as normal and review results.
  2. In Output Records window, indicate results and click SAVE.
  3. Select Field Tagged from the menu on the next screen, and click Continue.
  4. Your browser will display a dialog box asking where to save the file. ISI’s default file name is savedrecs.txt.
  5. In Refworks, select References and click Import on the drop-down menu.
  6. In the Import Filter/Data Source field, select ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) from the drop-down list.
  7. In the Database field, select either Current Contents Connect or Web of Science [Science Citation Index] from the drop-down list. 
  8. You may optionally specify the folder where you would like your references to go in the Import References into field. All references also go into the Last Imported folder.
  9. Select Import Data from the Following Text File and Browse to find your file.
  10. Click the Import button. The text references that you downloaded from the web site will be imported into the Last Imported folder.

Exporting Citations from PubMed

 

PubMed does not have its own Direct Export tool, but you may save citations to a file and import them into Refworks.  

  1. Run search as normal and review results.  To save records from multiple searches select Clipboard from the Send to drop-down list.
  1. On the search results page, select MEDLINE on the drop-down list next to the Display button.
  2. Choose File from the Send to drop-down list.
  3. Click on the Save button in the File Download window. Save the file somewhere easily accessible, such as your desktop. The default file name is pubmed-result.htm. 


PubMed

 

  1. In Refworks, select References, then click Import on the drop-down menu.
  2. In the Import Filter/Data Source field, select NLM Pubmed from the drop-down list.
  3. In the Database field, select Pubmed from the drop-down list. 
  4. You may optionally specify the folder where you would like your references to go in the Import References into field. All references also go into the Last Imported folder.
  5. Select Import Data from the Following Text File and Browse to find your file.
  6. Click the Import button. The text references that you downloaded from the web site will be imported into the Last Imported folder.
